While at work today, I had my radio on a station that was playing only Christmas music. It was the old sappy kind that my family listened to back home. You know the ones like ‘Pretty Paper’ and others by Bing Crosby, Kenny Rogers etc. At first I wanted to change the station but then something weird happened, ‘Silver Bells’ came on.
The oldie coursed through me like it was injected, awakening memories and feelings that I thought I had grown out of. I suddenly felt like a kid again. “Aren’t I a bit too old to be feeling like this about Christmas?” I thought. For a few moments, I allowed myself to give in to the music. Work was temporarily forgotten. The smell, the smiles, family, shopping, wrapping presents…I experienced it all. It was only November 30th but to me it felt like December 24th. I know why they call it sappy music.
Would I feel like this when I’m 7o years old? Or 80? Do we ever lose that magic? I hope not because Christmas is my very favorite time of the year by far. Have yourself a merry little Christmas…
