How Could They Have Known?

A Mother waits...

A Mother waits…

Last week Monday a horrific accident took place on the small Caribbean island of St. Vincent, A van carrying young children ages 11 to 17 ran off the road and ended up in the ocean, smashing to pieces on the jagged rocks below.  Five students lost their lives, two are still missing.  It was a sad day for the tiny island where everyone knows everyone.  Story here.

The first photo was taken a few days after the accident and shows a mother sitting alone at the scene of the accident.  Two of her kids were on the van.  She lost both.

As a doting parent, both of the above photos haunted me all last week.  Looking at what remained of the van, that anyone even survived is a miracle.  The lonely mother sitting in anguish spoke a million words to me. How could a they have known?

How could a parent have known that when they kissed their kid goodbye that morning that it would be the last goodbye? How could they have known that plans made for a family evening after school would not be kept as their kid would never come home again?  How could a parent have known that their kid was eating their last breakfast?

The unsuspecting kids on the bus, planning their school day. How could they have known they would never even make it to school? How could they have known that the homework they proudly completed the night before would never be turned in? How could they have known that Monday January 12th 2015 would be the day their lives would be forever changed? Or maybe end?

If only they had known…

To all those affected by this tragedy, my heartfelt sympathies to you.  My prayers and thoughts go out to you every day.  To the deceased, may your souls rest in peace.
